Paganilsson is the surf rock band from southern Sweden that blends explosive extravagance with tear-jerking melodies. Full throttle on some songs, devastatingly fragile melancholy on others … always with the Fender front and center. When the amps start smoking, hips start shaking and legs start twitching. Nobody can stand still when Paganilsson breathes new life into the beloved surf music of “the swinging sixties.”
The story of the surf band Paganilsson began in the little Swedish coastal town of Ystad in the summer of 1996. That’s when a trio featuring Magnus Nilsson (guitar), Fabian Rimfors (bass), and Peter Antonsson (drums) first started playing together. “A selection of Ystad’s finest musicians,” the local newspaper wrote, since all three came from popular, established bands. At the same time, the trio recorded their first songs and jokingly started calling themselves “Paganilsson.”
Why ’60s surf music? About six months later, during a road trip across the United States, some of the band members were completely blown away at The Viper Room, Johnny Depp’s club in Hollywood. On stage was Dick Dale, “the King of the Surf Guitar,” delivering an electrifying performance of his high-octane surf rock. The genre had recently enjoyed a revival in the wake of the cult classic Pulp Fiction, whose iconic soundtrack featured Dale’s explosive masterpiece “Misirlou”.
Back home, fired up with inspiration from the surf guitar king, Paganilsson made its first official live appearance as a band. It was Midsummer’s Eve, and their twangy, infectious instrumental music echoed across the rolling countryside as the crowd danced like crazy. The band members were hooked, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The surf rock band Paganilsson
The first incarnation of Paganilsson mixed minor-key folklore music with swinging surf rock and adrenaline-fueled Texas blues. But before long, the band narrowed its repertoire down to pure surf rock, built around songs by Dick Dale, The Ventures, Link Wray, and other bands that ruled the surf music scene during its golden age in the ’60s.
Wasn’t Paganilsson a quartet? Yes! After playing as a trio at parties for about a year and a half, trombonist and bass player Andreas Grufstedt joined the band———but on Hammond organ, of all things———while Peter’s brother Sam Antonsson took over the drums. Around the same time, the band started popping up more and more at venues across southern Sweden, with occasional trips to the capital of Stockholm.
For a brief period around the turn of the millennium, the band changed its name to Mezcalitos, and Andreas’s brother Marcus played the drums. In the early 2000s, the band called it quits and never played again … until the summer of 2025, when Paganilsson reunited in its original lineup for one night at a party. The band got the taste for it all over again, and the saga continued———now they’re back on the loose.
The name Paganilsson
… or is it Paganilssons? Who knows? All we know is that the band’s name is a mashup of the surnames of violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini and guitarist Magnus Nilsson. Okay, we also know that Paganilsson isn’t exactly the “surfiest” band name of all time. Maybe it doesn’t exactly sound like we’re cruising the California coast in a convertible with surfboards tied to the trunk. But hey, this is our name now———and we’ve got sandy beaches in southern Sweden too!
Before the band’s very first gig on Midsummer’s Eve in 1996, Magnus had a vision in a dream. He heard “The Silver Trill Caprice”, a lost piece supposedly composed by Paganini that had been missing for more than 170 years.
The piece was said to imitate the distinctive early-summer song of the green warbler and required extraordinarily virtuosic fingerwork. According to legend, Paganini’s composition possessed the same divine allure as the irresistible songs of the sirens in The Odyssey.
That Midsummer night also became the first———and so far only———time the world ever heard the enchanting Silver Trill Caprice. But who knows? Maybe it’ll pop up again someday. You never know with Paganilsson.
